CMRT: filling the conflict minerals template

The Conflict Minerals Reporting Template (CMRT) is a free Excel file from the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI). It’s the standard way for suppliers to tell their customers whether their products contain tin, tantalum, tungsten or gold (3TG), and where those metals were smelted or refined. Customers ask for it because of section 1502 of the US Dodd-Frank Act, the EU Conflict Minerals Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2017/821, and their own responsible sourcing policies.

What’s in the template

  • Declaration: your company details, the scope of the declaration (company, product or user-defined), and for each metal, whether it is needed in your products, where it comes from, and whether you have received information from all relevant suppliers.
  • Company questions: your conflict minerals policy and due diligence, whether you require your suppliers to fill a CMRT, and whether you check their answers.
  • Smelter list: the smelters and refiners in your supply chain, ideally with their RMI identification numbers.
  • Product list: the products the declaration covers, for a product-level declaration.

Why it takes time

Each customer asks for the current version of the template, sometimes their own variant, often for specific part numbers. The answers come from your suppliers’ CMRTs, combined into yours. Keeping them current, and copying the same answers into each new file, is where the time goes.

How Kelpfox fills it

Kelpfox reads and fills a CMRT like any other customer template, from the facts you keep about your minerals, smelters and policies. Facts can be kept per product or part, and imported from a spreadsheet if you have many. Every answer shows its source, and a question your facts don’t cover stays blank and is marked, never guessed. Upload the version of the template your customer asks for; Kelpfox fills the file you upload.

Questions

What's the difference between the CMRT and the EMRT?

The CMRT covers tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold (3TG). The Extended Minerals Reporting Template (EMRT) covers other minerals, such as cobalt and mica. Both come from the Responsible Minerals Initiative and work the same way.

Can I declare at company level?

Yes, if your answers apply to all your products. Otherwise, declare at product level and list the products the answers cover.
