EcoVadis questionnaire: answers from your facts

EcoVadis rates how a company manages sustainability, from a questionnaire and the documents that support it. Customers ask their suppliers to take the assessment and use the scorecard in purchasing decisions, often every year.

How the questionnaire is built

The questionnaire is tailored to your industry, size and countries of operation. It covers four themes:

• Environment: energy, emissions, water, waste, pollution and the end of life of your products.
• Labour and human rights: health and safety, working conditions, diversity, and child and forced labour.
• Ethics: corruption, anti-competitive practices, information security and data protection.
• Sustainable procurement: how you assess and work with your own suppliers.

Within each theme, the questions ask about your policies, the actions you take and the results you measure, and ask for documents that back them up.

What counts as evidence

Analysts look for documents that show a practice is real: a signed and dated policy, a certificate such as ISO 14001 or ISO 45001, a report with figures, a training record, a supplier code of conduct and how you check that suppliers follow it. Statements without documents score little. Keeping these documents current, and knowing which one answers which question, is most of the work.

How to prepare the next assessment

1. Collect your evidence once. Policies, certificates and reports, each with its date and, where it has one, its expiry.
2. Keep the figures behind your answers as facts. Energy use, emissions, injury rates, training hours: one value per year, with the report it comes from.
3. Reuse what customers already asked. Many questions in customers’ own sustainability and LkSG questionnaires overlap with EcoVadis.
4. Have someone own the answers. A named person reviews them before you submit.
